Ohio Bar Liability Insurance Company (OBLIC) and OSBA Solo, Small Firm & General Practice Section will co-sponsor TWO full days of CLE sessions during the 2014 Ohio State Bar Association Annual Convention at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Columbus. The OSBA Senior Lawyers Section is also joining in sponsoring these sessions. Thursday, designated as Young Lawyers’ Day, will also be co-sponsored by the OSBA Young Lawyers Section.
With the main caption, “Scenarios for Success,” these sessions will provide experienced practitioners as well as new lawyers practical information for best practices to enhance their law firms and plan ahead for practice succession and disaster avoidance. Several of these topics are “back by popular demand” as practicing lawyers continue to ask for guidance in these areas.
In the first session, Scenarios for Success: Surviving & Thriving in the Changing Legal Environment, Chad Burton and Stephanie Kimbro will discuss emerging practice models and how lawyers can use them to build their practices. Chad and Stephanie will share their experience as practicing lawyers, so you’ll learn first-hand the “do-ability” of it!
Scenarios for Success: Using Of-Counsel, Co-counsel, Office Sharing & Virtual Office to Maximize Your Legal Career Options will feature a discussion with Chad Burton and former Ohio Disciplinary Counsel Jonathan Coughlan of the parameters for using these ideas in your practice, including ethical considerations. This is practical information for what many attorneys are doing.
The next time slot will have two concurrent sessions. You can choose to attend either Scenarios for Success: Financial Issues in Setting Up & Running a Law Practice or Scenarios for Success: Financial Planning for Practicing Attorneys. The session on Setting Up & Running a Law Practice will be presented by Jocelyn Armstrong and Brad Pulcini and will address student loans and law office budgeting. Financial Planning for Practicing Attorneys will be given by Daniel Betzel, JD, RFC.
The first day will conclude with Scenarios for Success: Financial Considerations in Building Your Practice & Positioning it for Sale. Whether you are beginning, “middling” or ending your law practice, you won’t want to miss this informative session with Thomas Bonasera and Laura Wojciechowski, CPA, EA, PFS.
Thomas Bonasera will be joined by former Ohio Disciplinary Counsel Jonathan Coughlan the first thing on Friday, May 2nd for a session on ethical and practical issues for disaster recovery and practice succession. This will provide useful information for your practice Scenarios for Success: A Practicing Lawyer’s Guide to Disaster Avoidance & Business Continuity in a Digital World will continue the theme of what you need to do to ensure your practice won’t go askew if something happens to you, your office or your technology. This will be a two-part session presented by Barron Henley.
Finally, on Friday you’ll hear Scenarios for Success: “I never thought it would happen to me.” Lloyd Cohen will share his personal experience of how disaster planning saved his practice. Lloyd is a member of the OSBA Solo, Small Firm & General Practice Section and author of the book, Being Prepared: A Lawyer’s Guide for Dealing with Disability or Unexpected Events.
The sessions will conclude on Friday afternoon with Scenarios for Success: Final Thoughts on Future Planning by Barron Henley. Session attendees should come away from these two days with much to think about and many things to do for their law practices. I think you’ll agree this really is “don’t miss” CLE!
